First Rock of Ages Rehearsal!

We had our first Rock of Ages rehearsal on Sunday September 12th. We have two bands this time, and quite a few new faces to the program! The junior rockers worked on California Dreaming by The Mamas and Papas. I was shocked to find out that none of the kids knew the song before we started working on it! I guess they will become more familiar with it when it winds up on Glee. Anyway, by the end of rehearsal we had the kids singing harmonies! This is the first time we have been able to incorporate vocal harmonies into the program because for the first time we have many vocalists in the band. This should make for a very interesting junior rock band! Next song for the junior rockers..."Benny and The Jets".

The teen band began work on "In My Life" by The Beatles. The teen band is all returning members except for one, so they made quick work of the song, and are ready to move onto some new stuff next week! We'll keep you updated on the bands' progress from week to week!
Stay tuned...

Meet Ting! Our New Piano Teacher

Ting C. Huang was born in Taipei, Taiwan. She realized her passion for music when she was four years old. Piano was her first instrument. At the age of 8, she started playing oboe and later graduated from Kuang Jen Music School in Taipei, Taiwan. During her teens, Ting actively engaged in a variety of music activities. She was the principle oboist of Taipei County Youth Orchestra, the lead singer of the school band, and the member of school choir, all while continuing her piano studies!

In college, Ting had broadened her horizons. She pursued her bachelors degree in social work with a minor in music. She focused her studies on psychiatric social work and completed her internship in Psychiatry Department (Adult) at National Taiwan University Hospital. As a musician, she was the principle oboist for numerous wind ensembles and an oboist in The Wind Band of Taipei Symphony Orchestra which performed at the National Concert Hall several times. As an educator, she worked as a swimming coach for Blue Whale Swimming School, substitute oboe instructor at National Kinmen Senior High School and as a tutor as well.

With her heart being in music, Ting decided to utilize this passion as a therapeutic tool and as a media to communicate with, bring joy to and improve the quality of life of various populations. Upon this revelation, Ting moved to the United States in 2005 and pursed her master's degree in music therapy.

Ting received the International Chancellor’s Non-Resident Scholarship Award (2005-2009) from the University of Missouri- Kansas City (UMKC) and was admitted for the music therapy program. Ting also received a scholarship from the General Federation of Women’s Clubs.

Ting has done her clinical works and internship in a wide variety of settings, such as mental health hospitals, elementary schools, free health clinics, children’s hospitals, children’s development centers, skilled nursing homes and adult day programs. Ting is a board certified music therapist, and an accomplished music educator. She believes that music is a powerful way to communicate, interact and bring people together, and that belief is reflected daily in her work as a therapist and a teacher.

Opening for a Beatle!

OK. Five followers is enough to get me started, even if two of the followers are myself, and Olga. I opened for Ringo Starr and his All Starr band on Saturday 8/07/10 at the Greek Theatre in Hollywood. It was our fourth time playing at the venue in the last two years. I play guitar in the Bob Gentry band (www.bobgentry.com) for those of you that don't know me. The Greek Theatre is an amazing venue, an absolutely beautiful setting to put on a show. It seats about 6000, and is surrounded by hills and trees with perfect weather at this time of year. The staff has always treated us well, but the real reason we love playing the Greek so much is the catering! All the artists are treated to top notch food. For this show, it was tilapia or leg of lamb with an unbelievable sauce! Salads, potatoes, rice and all sorts of desserts. The other plus side of the meal ticket is that you never know who you will run into in the dining hall. We hoped to meet and greet Ringo, but I guess he didn't eat, which explains how he stays so thin! However, some of his band were there eating, so you know, I just sit down and eat with Rick Derringer, or Edgar Winter etc...

But, enough about the food. It's these moments where I realize that I am happy to be able to play music for a living. It may not be the most lucrative profession, but it has moments like this that make it all worth it.

I've Got It!

Well, I've had the blog up for a while, and don't have any followers. This is entirely my fault, as I've had no idea what to do with this space or the website. Well folks, I have done some studying, and am now updating our website and blog all by myself! This blog will be used as an informal way to spread the love of our business, Rainbow Bridge Music Studio. I will use it to talk about music, shows I'm playing, posting pictures etc...

As I get better at living in the matrix, I will somehow link all of this to Facebook, Twitter and Flickr. I will put all pictures involving events for Rainbow Bridge Music Studio. It is my goal to keep this updated regularly...no more slacking! No more waiting to get together with an administrator in order to update the site.

Please subscribe to the blog! It will be a great way to continue to grow this musical community we are trying to build!

Thanks,

Kevin Jellison
